Set-up a Landing Page

A landing page or squeeze page is a one-page website where you can send your potential customers (or they can find you).

Before you get started, you may be wondering why you would want or need a landing page. If you do not have an online presence, and you do not have a website, a landing page is an option that provides a home for your information or offer, without the complication of building a complete website, and paying for website hosting.

You can set-up your landing page as your only Internet presence, use it as a place to provide detailed information to your potential customers, collect e-mail addresses, or offer a product or service.

This guide shows you how to set-up a landing page using Leadpages. There are many other landing page solutions available, including options that could be directly supported by your e-mail service provider.

To get started, you will need:

A defined purpose for your page – ask: why are you creating this page

Your offer – decide if you are going to offer a resource to visitors to this page

E-mail management, if applicable – if you collect e-mail addresses, you will need a provider to store and manage the data. Leadpages is a landing page and lead generation application that does not store your collected e-mails.

Your page content and images, if necessary

Optional: a brand logo and colors. To maintain a consistent look and feel across your brand, you should ensure your landing page looks the same as your website.

A landing page can be a powerful tool for introducing potential customers to your brand. You must decide on the purpose of your landing page, and the value you want to deliver.

For example:

Generate leads – create a page where visitors can enter an e-mail address in exchange for value through a newsletter, free resource or similar product.

Make sales – create a page where you can sell your product or service, and set up the distribution path.

Event registration – create a promotion page for an event you are hosting, and include the required logistics.

This step-by-step guide follows the process for creating a landing page in Leadpages.

4. Select your Offer

You can make a selection here based on your defined purpose for your landing page.

A successful lead generation page is promising to deliver something of value to the visitor in exchange for their email address.

If you do not have an offer, select Free Resource.

Your selection determines the type of templates that will be displayed.

NOTE: Leadpages has two separate template views – Drag & Drop and Standard. This guide is for Drag & Drop templates only, which are easier and intuitive to use.

If you want to see all options, select Browse All Templates

5. Select a landing page template

In this example, Leadpages is showing you a selection of high-performing landing pages with different options for images and content placement. You will be able to change these features.

For getting started, pick a template that best suits your preferences.

6. Name your page

This name can be changed, but if you are planning to create multiple landing pages you will probably want to create a naming convention that makes it easy to find the page in a long list.

7. Change the template content to your content

And now the fun begins! In Leadpages, you can click on an item and edit the content. Go through the page section-by-section, and change the content and images to match your business.

If you would like to watch a video overview of Leadpages page navigation, click this link.

You can work on the page through the Navigation links on the left side:

Layout shows you the arrangement of the page into sections, rows and columns. As you click on the left, the section is highlighted on the right, and you can edit the words, change the image or move parts around.

Widgets – you can add or remove widgets that reflect your message or functionality you would like to display on the page

Styles is where you change the page font, color, background and sizing

Settings are an advanced feature for your page analytics, search engine optimization and social media

8. Set-up the Call-to-Action button

When you click on the call-to-action button, you will see the pop-up box available for editing.

Click on the content you want to edit.

Note: the left side navigation changes to reflect that you are working on the pop-up, not the main page.

The options on the left are now – Layout, Widgets, Tracking

9. Create an integration with your e-mail management system

When you click the call-to-action button, a new set of tools appear on the left side to create the integration between your pop-up and your e-mail management system.

NOTE: you may have to go to your email management system to create the appropriate connection form, and ensure the two systems are integrated

The functionality on the left side is now – Integration, Fields and Actions.

Integration – You can have a notification sent to an email address when someone signs up, and you can have the signup data transferred directly to your email management system.

Fields – You can add or remove additional fields for data you may wish to collect

10. Select where to send your customer after sign-up

After a customer has successfully signed up, best practice is to move them off the sign-up screen to a thank you page, another landing page, external URL, or send an email and lead magnet.

Besides saying thank you for signing up, a thank you page can include another link to the free resource, or even another resource. The page can live in Leadpages, or be an external URL on your website.

You may also wish to send customers to an ‘upsell’ page, where they are offered a product for purchase that follows directly from the free resource you have distributed.

Actions – After the visitor has signed-up, decide where they should be sent next

11. Optional: Add a Lead Magnet for Leadpages delivery

A lead magnet is a usually free resource such as a PDF guide that you provide to your page visitors in exchange for their email address.

You can put the document in Leadpages for automatic delivery when a visitor signs up, or you can deliver it separately through another process such as your website or email management system.

To use Leadpages for your lead magnets, you have to set the lead magnet up separately.

Click Add a Lead Magnet, and Select Add a New Lead Magnet in Account Settings from the drop-down.

This opens up the your Account Settings Page on the Lead Magnet Delivery page.

Click Create New Lead Magnet

Fill out the Create Lead Magnet screen. You have the choice to upload a file or paste a URL where Leadpages will retrieve the document.

If this is your first communication to your potential customers, take time to make sure the e-mail content reflects your brand and business, and includes contact information or other data you want them to receive.

This email stays in Leadpages and is not part of the emails stored by your email service provider.

12. Preview your page

Once you have completed all your data entry and integrations, preview your page to make sure the information is exactly as you intended.

Select Preview to see how the page will appear to the world

Once you have clarified that everything looks good, select Exit Preview or Publish

13. Publish

When you select Publish, the confirmation box will appear.

Note: your page on Leadpages is branded with lpages.co. You can change this if you create a custom domain from your website.

In this box, you can also change the page name. But again, this name change is only for Leadpages. You can create a different URL name for your custom link on your website.

Select Publish and the page is ‘live.’

You can begin using the URL immediately as a link to send people from your social, website or in-person to sign-up for your offer.

14. Optional: Customize the URL

This step is applicable if you have a website, and would like to use a custom URL, you must first download the Leadpages plugin and install it on your WordPress site.

After you select Publish, find the page you created on your main landing pages page. Select Actions.

Select Publishing Options

Select WordPress and follow the prompts for downloading the plugin

You will have to install the plugin on your WordPress site.

In WordPress, Leadpages will appear as an option in your Dashboard menu.

Select New Page and Select the Leadpages URL for the page you just created.

Enter a new URL, if applicable and save.

Select View Page to see how the page looks with your website URL.

You can see the same page you created in Leadpages now is customized with your website URL.

Use the custom URL as the link you share to drive people to your landing page.

This information is separate from Leadpages, which will continue to track and manage the page under its Leadpages name.

Okay, you are all set to begin building your audience or customer base with your new landing page.

15. Pro Tip: Reset Analytics to Zero

After you Publish, but Before you begin distributing your link

Leadpages tracks all ‘live’ views. If you have looked at your live page a few times, maybe double or triple checking your content, or even testing that all your integrations were working, you probably want to reset the analytics count to zero before you promote the page to the world.

If you are expecting tens of thousands of clicks, your few views may not matter. But if you want a clean start, go to Analytics and move the count to zero.

Select the Analytics button for the page
Select Reset Analytics from the drop down
You will have a ‘clean’ slate to begin tracking visitors to your page.
